Drug Screening
A company that has chosen Affiliated Physicians for the management of their drug screening program relies on our staff to provide courteous, reliable, expeditious and private handling of their applicants/employees.
Collection and Procedures
Affiliated Physicians facility has a separate area that is maintained with two bathrooms that have been designated for the collection of drug specimens. There is an individual assigned to this area at all times to ensure that the established guidelines are followed. This includes following the chain of custody procedures documenting the collection of urine specimens.
Bathrooms used for drug screen collections are set to SAMHSA (Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration), (formerly known as NIDA - National Institute on Drug Abuse) standards. There are no sinks in the bathrooms and a bluing solution is kept in the toilet bowl.
All collectors are DOT certified, ensuring the highest level of care and quality.
For convenience, no appointment is necessary. Affiliated Physicians drug screen department is open daily from 7:30am to 4:30pm.
In addition to our New York collection site, Affiliated Physicians has a network of collection locations throughout the United States.
Urine and Hair Tests
Urine Tests
The most common test used by employers is the 8-panel drug screen which tests for:
- Amphetamines Opiates
- Barbiturates Marijuana (THC)
- Benzodiazepine Methaqualone
- Cocaine Phencyclidine (PCP)
A 10-panel drug screen is also available. This test includes the eight drugs above and Methadone and Propoxyphene.
Drug screen specimens are collected using the “Chain of Custody” procedures.
Specimens are analyzed by an enzyme immunoassay screening method called EMIT. To ensure validity, all positive specimens are required by law to be confirmed using an alternative method, which is knows as Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS).
Negative results are available within 24-48 hours. Results can be reported to the client verbally, in writing, or via Affiliated Physicians online system. If any of the above listed drugs are detected, confirmation is done automatically. Final confirmation can take an additional 3 to 5 days based on information confirmed by the MRO.
Hair Tests
A 5-panel hair analysis drug screen with “Chain of Custody” documentation is also available. This includes:
- Amphetamines Opiates
- Marijuana (THC) Cocaine
- Phencyclidine (PCP)
Results are available within 48-72 hours. However, if a confirmation is performed, an additional 48 hours may be required.
